5 ways hypnobirthing can change your birth

1 Hypnobirthing can take away any fears you may have of giving birth; by the end of the course you might even feel excited about going into labour!

One of the most important aspects of a hypnobirthing course, is understanding how being scared during labour can really derail the whole process. When you are scared, your body produces a hormone called adrenaline which causes you to go into the ‘fight or flight’ response. This is really not what a woman in labour needs, so I spend time helping you to overcome any fear or anxiety you might have about giving birth and helping you to start to feel more positive and confident about it.

2 You will learn things about your body that will totally amaze you!

Contrary to popular belief, hypnobirthing isn’t just some hippy dippy craze, and it isn’t just breathing and relaxation. There is so much more to it than that. A full hypnobirthing course will teach you everything you need to know about the labour process, and all the incredible things that happen when you birth your baby. I bet you didn’t know that your body is so amazing, the muscles and hormones of your body could birth your baby even if you were unconscious or in a coma! That is how powerful your body is.

3 Hypnobirthing can reduce the chance of you needing medical intervention such as induction of labour, use of forceps, or a caesarean section.

There is research to show that women who use hypnobirthing tools and techniques have lower risk of needing medical intervention during their birth. As part of my course, you will look at the things that often do lead to intervention, and start to understand that in many situations, you have other options, and that there are things that you can do to reduce the chance of you needing medical intervention.

4 Your birth partner will no longer feel like a spare part!

I have spoken to so many birth partners who hadn’t done any antenatal classes before the birth of their baby (or perhaps they did a basic class but it didn’t prepare them in any way), and they often describe feeling like a spare part. Not understanding what is happening to their partner, or having any ways to support her. This can leave them feeling really disappointed and frustrated, and can also cause issues in their relationship if the mum felt like she wasn’t supported, or feels let down in some way.

A large part of my hypnobirthing course is aimed at giving the birth partner a whole set of tools and techniques that they can use on the day to help their partner stay calm and cope with labour. It also helps couples to feel closer together as it is often the first time they have had a chance to really discuss their hopes and fears. By the end of my course, couples feel like they are both on the same page and know all the ways they can work together to have a better birth.

5 Your baby is more likely to be born with a higher APGAR score (the measure of a newborn babies health immediately after birth)

There is research to show that women who use hypnobirthing techqniques during pregnancy and labour have babies who are born with higher APGAR scores. This is a quick visual test used by midwives and doctors to determine the health of a newborn baby. The test is based on 5 criteria such as babies skin colour, breathing, pulse and movement and a score of 7 or more (out of 10) is common for healthy babies.

There are a few different reasons why this might be the case, one of which is that hypnobirthing often reduces the need for pain medication, another reason is that when mums are able to avoid the ‘fight or flight’ response during labour, her baby will receive higher levels of oxygen and lower levels of stress hormones.
