When it comes to pregnancy, we are being more and more encouraged to tune into our instincts about our baby’s movements, which is fantastic. We should be aware of our baby’s regular patterns of movements and report anything outside of that to our midwife and get checked out whenever necessary.
And yet in so many other areas of life as a mum, we are encouraged to suppress those natural instincts, to do things in the way society tells us, to do things that feel wrong for us and our babies, to go against what feels comfortable and natural for our bodies.
When was the last time you allowed yourself to trust your instincts?
Are you doing things the way you want to do them, or are you doing them the way you feel you should be doing them, the way you’ve been told to do them, perhaps just the way you have seen other people doing them (on One Born Every Minute, on films, on other TV shows)
It can take a lot of confidence, determination, support and education to stand up for our instincts, to fight against the societal ‘norms’, to really trust ourselves. It’s hard when your friends and family are all telling you they did it this way, but you want to do it a different way.
Finding your voice during your pregnancy and birth can have a huge impact on your confidence as a new mum. Standing up for what feels right for you and your baby can be hugely empowering and can start you down the path of allowing yourself to follow your instincts, giving yourself permission to do things a little bit differently.
Whilst everyone around you is telling you that you shouldn’t bother preparing for birth because there is no point, whilst they are telling you you’ll need all the drugs, whilst they are telling you how horrific birth is, all the time you are thinking to yourself “there must be another way”.
You’ve watched One Born Every Minute, and although you love seeing all the births and that warm feeling you get inside when you see a mother holding her baby for the first time, you see them all lying on their backs, screaming out, swearing at their partners and all the time you are thinking to yourself “there must be another way”.
And I’m here to tell you that yes, there is another way!
You can educate yourself about your birthing body, what is going to happen to you throughout each stage of labour. How your hormones will help you, how you can help baby get into the best position for a smoother birth.
You can learn how to keep cool and calm, so you can work with your body instead of fighting against it. You can learn the impact fear can have on your birth process and how you can manage it.
You can prepare your body and mind by practicing regular relaxation and deep, effective breathing.
You can surround yourself by positive thoughts, positive stories, positive people. The power of the mind when it comes to birth is so important.
You can be fully supported by your birth partner. When you both learn about all these things together, you work much more effectively as a team. Your partner can learn all the ways in which they can help and support you throughout the rest of your pregnancy and throughout the birth of your baby.
You can build up the knowledge and the confidence to birth the way you feel is best for you and your baby. You realise you are an individual, that you don’t have to blindly do as you are told just to fit into hospital guidelines, you can be the decision maker, you can allow yourself to trust your instincts, to trust your body. Of course you can still take advice from the professionals, but you can be confident that YOU are the expert in your body!
You can finally have the confidence to trust your instincts, to go against the norm and do what feel right and all the time you will have someone by your side who has got your back (me!) I will be there to support you in whatever choices you make. I will be there to guide you through the maze of information, to help you understand your options, to be there every step of the way (well maybe not ‘there’ but at the end of the phone at least!).
